Billings Backyard Series Presents A Timely Workshop on Composting WOODSTOCK, VERMONT.... Billings Farm & Museum will host its first Billings Backyard workshop from 9AM to 12PM on Saturday, July 25, featuring the timely topic of Composting. The three-hour workshop will be led by Lisa Ransom from Grow Compost of Waterbury, Vermont, and held outdoors at Billings Farm & Museum. The Billings Backyard Series is underwritten by a generous grant from the SpringRiver Private Foundation Trust. Vermont now prohibits food scraps from going to landfill. Lucky for us, these scraps are full of nutrients that can benefit our soils, help us to grow organic food and keep dangerous greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere. Discover the benefits of “closing the loop” with your own household food scraps in this interactive, hands-on demonstration of a healthy compost and digesting system. Spend a few hours with us outdoors and learn: · How to contain your backyard compost · Where to locate your pile or bin · What to put into your compost pile (and what to avoid!) · How to manage your compost pile · Troubleshooting · Harvesting your compost · Alternatives to a backyard bin, including pick up service, and drop-off composting Other topics will include how to avoid issues with wildlife and how to use your compost after harvest. Space is limited to 20 participants to ensure social distancing. The workshop registration is $20 per person and includes admission to Billings Farm & Museum. Member pricing is $10 per person. For more information about the workshop and to register, call 802-457-2355 or visit https://billingsfarm.org/classes-workshops/. Visiting Billings Farm Safely: Currently the Billings Farm & Museum site is limited to a maximum capacity of 225 people at one time, per State of Vermont guidance. Face coverings must be worn by all guests over the age of 2 everywhere on the site, including the outdoors. Additionally, this workshop will be held outdoors to ensure social distancing. While at Billings Farm, workshop participants can visit the new, state-of-the-art Heifer Barn, the Vermont Farm Life Exhibit, the Ottauquechee River Walk and the Heirloom, Pollinator, and Victory Gardens. Watch the farm animals – cows, draft horses, goats and sheep – in their scenic pastures. The 1890 Farm Manager’s House is closed to the public at this time, however interpretive displays can be viewed from the porch of the house. The Dairy Bar opens daily at 11AM and serves Vermont ice cream as well as Billings Farm cheeses and Norwich Farm Creamery products made exclusively with Billings Farm milk.
